How to make matcha at home
Smooth matcha tea or a café-style matcha latte takes about three minutes. The secret is the water temperature — and a good whisk.
What you need
- Matcha powder — our matcha tea powder
- A whisk — our electric milk frother does it in seconds
- Hot water and milk (any kind) for a latte
Step by step
- 1
Measure the matcha
Sift about 1 teaspoon (around 2 g) of matcha into a cup or bowl. Sifting breaks up clumps so it mixes smoothly.
- 2
Add hot — not boiling — water
Pour in about 60 ml of water at roughly 75–80°C (170–175°F). Boiling water scorches matcha and makes it bitter, so let a just-boiled kettle sit for a few minutes first.
- 3
Whisk until smooth and foamy
Use an electric milk frother for 15–20 seconds, moving it gently up and down, until there are no lumps and a light foam forms on top.
- 4
Froth your milk (for a latte)
Warm about 180 ml of milk — dairy, oat or almond all work — then froth it with the same frother until creamy.
- 5
Pour and enjoy
Pour the frothed milk over your matcha for a latte, or top up with more hot water for classic matcha tea. For iced matcha, whisk with a little water, then pour over ice and cold milk.
Tips for better matcha
- Bitter taste? Your water is too hot, or you used too much powder — cool the water and start with 1 teaspoon.
- Clumpy? Sift first, and whisk with a small amount of water before adding the rest.
- Like it sweeter? Stir in honey, maple syrup or vanilla before frothing the milk.
- Store matcha sealed and away from light and heat to keep its colour and flavour.
